Knit Locally Book Club: October Meeting

Tuesday, October 2

6:30-8:30 pm

Our October Book Club selection is Ship Fever by Andrea Barrett.

1996 National Book Award Winner for Fiction.

The elegant short fictions gathered hereabout the love of science and the science of love are often set against the backdrop of the nineteenth century. Interweaving historical and fictional characters, they encompass both past and present as they negotiate the complex territory of ambition, failure, achievement, and shattered dreams. In “Ship Fever,” the title novella, a young Canadian doctor finds himself at the center of one of history’s most tragic epidemics. In “The English Pupil,” Linnaeus, in old age, watches as the world he organized within his head slowly drifts beyond his reach. And in “The Littoral Zone,” two marine biologists wonder whether their life-altering affair finally was worth it. In the tradition of Alice Munro and William Trevor, these exquisitely rendered fictions encompass whole lives in a brief space. As they move between interior and exterior journeys, “science is transformed from hard and known fact into malleable, strange and thrilling fictional material” (Boston Globe)

The Allodola Shawl, knit in two colors of Oink Pigments Nimbus

Our latest shop sample is a stunner! The Allodola Shawl by Heather Zoppetti uses a clever combination of slipped and cabled stitches to create a unique geometric pattern, while short rows create a fun ruffled edge. The design is perfect to highlight a hand-dyed variegated yarn combined with a complimentary solid or tonal. It is easy to adjust the size or length, as it is knit from edge to edge…simply follow the increases to the desired size, then start decreasing back down!

We knit ours in our new yarn, Nimbus from Oink Pigments. This Merino / Nylon / Cashmere blend is OH.SO.SOFT! Please feel free to come in and touch it for yourself to experience the luscious softness and the beautiful halo. Beth thoroughly enjoyed knitting with it — it’s very easy on your hands! Beth used Oink Pigments Nimbus in the variegated colorway “4 Play” and the solid colorway “Sex&Violets.” You can purchase this combo below (Combination 9) or go for a sparkle version of the same colors! (Combination 5)

“A Cowl of a Different Color” can be knit as long cowl (perfect to double-up for warmth, or wear long to show off all of the colors) or a scarf. It is knit from one “21 Color Kit” from Blue Sky Fibers, as well as 3 skeins of Woolstok in a main color of your choice (we used Highland Fleece.)

Meet Our Shop Sample: The Claudia Shawl, Knit in Yankee Stride MCN

Our newest shop sample is this gorgeous Claudia Shawl by Christina Körber-Reith. Knit in four colors of Yankee Stride, a luscious Merino/Cashmere/Nylon blend from Yankee Dyer, the finished shawl has a bold, modern look with drape for days.

Although the colorwork makes this shawl look like a complicated knit, it is a simple triangular shape that uses slipped stitches to create the ‘plaid’ effect. Once you have the stitch pattern down, it quickly becomes a mindless knit.

The Yankee Stride yarn is a perfect match for this pattern, with the touch of cashmere to make this a luxury knit piece and give it beautiful drape. The rich color palette we love from Yankee Dyer means that you can find a stunning color palette that you love, whether soft and romantic pinks and greys, or bold and bright purples and blues.

Once you curl up in this shawl, you won’t want to take it off–it’s a delightful wrap for cozy fall evenings and cold winter days.

We’d love to help you pick out your own custom color combo for this stunning shawl!
