The Yarn Story

This new arrival is a truly special yarn with an important backstory. The yarn is made from the wool of the Merino d’Arles sheep from Southern France, one of the softest European sheep breeds. These sheep are guided to mountain pastures every summer, following a centuries-old tradition. The wool from these sheep has a fineness of less than 22 microns. Recently, breeders joined forces with traders to improve quality and adhere to strict rules for keeping the sheep, shearing, and packing the wool. It is then processed by small spinning mill and dyer in England.

This yarn is guaranteed good for the environment, sheep and humans, and is organic-certified by the GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard.) Thie means that:

  • the sheep are kept according to organic farming standards and do not have to suffer painful mulesing surgery
  • the wool production does not pollute the environment with dangerous chemicals
  • energy consumption is controlled and residual waters are cleaned professionally
  • the workers are treated fairly and child labour is prohibited
  • minimum wages and standardised working hours are met
  • the yarn is free from harmful residues

The final design of the yarn and color palettes were chosen in collaboration with international designer Melanie Berg. This color palette is modern and easy to combine into multi-color combinations.

Melanie Berg has designed two shawl patterns especially for this yarn. Both are available for purchase on Ravelry or in-store.

The Verdon Shawl

From designer Melanie Berg:

“Verdon is knit with Rosy Green Wool’s new yarn, Merino d’Arles, and was inspired by the seasonal migration of this traditional sheep breed between Alpine meadows and protected valleys like the stunning Verdon Gorge. It’s a generous rectangular shawl knit from four different colors, using short rows to seamlessly combine textures like stripes and lace into a garment that captures the steep lines and beautiful color play of the Verdon Gorge itself.”

La Crau Shawl

From designer Melanie Berg:

“For millennia, migratory herds of Merino d’Arles sheep and their humans have roamed the fertile countryside across France, choosing the high meadows of the Alps during the summer and the lush plains of La Crau when winter’s chill hits.

This asymmetrical triangle shawl is knit in Rosy Green Wool’s new Merino d’Arles yarn, and pays tribute to the breed with a playful mosaic stitch pattern and contrast of summery and wintery hues.”
